If you have not feed greens to your Java's before, DON'T start feeding too much all of a sudden. A bit at time until their digestive systems can cope with it.

LETTUCE
I feed lettuce everyday to my Java's. I buy one fresh lettuce a week and keep it refrigerated, I snap four or five outer leaves off and hang them up in the indoor flight (I use a bulldog clip for hanging). When I am breeding I will use more lettuce so every breeding cage will have a good-sized leaf each.
The reason I use lettuce is because it's available through out the year in the supermarkets. The only lettuce I use is the flat leafed varieties (as seen on my photo)
The Java's soon work their way through it and get a good supply of Amino Acids out of it.

SUMMER TREATS AS THEY COME INTO SEASONS

THE COMMON DANDELION
( Taraxacum Officinale )
Dandelion leaves are also favoured by Java's. In the summer months there is an abundance of it. Just one word of warning make sure when you pick it, no dogs or animals have urinated on it or the most important thing, there has been no chemicals sprayed in the area as winds can carry chemicals for miles. I normally feed this on alternate days with the lettuce so when the dandelions run out I just feed 100% lettuce again.
WILD MEADOW GRASSES
Ripening meadow grass is a real treat for your Java's unfortunately its only for a short period of time at the back end of summer. Don't ask what the names of the grassers are I don't know, just look for grass heads with bigger seed rather than small seed heads. What I do is snap the grass stems around twelve inches long and when you have a good hand full, like a bunch of flowers, slip a rubber band around the stems, then when you get home all you have to do is hang the bunch of grass up in the flight, my Java's will hang off the wire trying to get their share of this food. Tip here you can use the remaining grass stems for nesting materials. As I have mentioned before please do be careful where you pick the grass that no animals have urinated on it or if chemicals have been used on it or near by. I feed this food as and when I have the time to go and pick it, pick a good day and enjoy your time in the countryside, don't forget to take a bag with you for all that chickweed.
CHICK WEED
( Stellaria Media )
While you are out picking your grass keep an eye out for chickweed this is loaded with goodness for your birds. It's normally found on recently disturbed earth. Make sure you are a 100% certain it is chickweed, see my photo to give you some idea of what it looks like. With this weed being very close to the ground it is recommended that you give it a very good wash before feeding it to your Java's. After you have washed it put it in a large shallow bowl and place it on the floor of the flight. Your Java's will make short work of eating it.
